What is a well-child visit?

A well-child visit is a proactive physical and developmental exam performed when your child is feeling healthy — the foundation of preventive pediatric care.

Unlike a sick visit focused on treating active symptoms, a wellness checkup concentrates on whole-child health: growth tracking, developmental screening, disease prevention, immunizations, and personalized parent guidance. At Calabasas Pediatrics, these visits follow guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — never rushed, always tailored to your child’s age, lifestyle, and stage.

What’s included

What every well-child exam covers

Our board-certified pediatricians spend real time with your family — conducting detailed screenings, answering your questions, and building a wellness plan that fits your child.

Growth & vital signs

Height, weight, BMI, and head circumference plotted on standard curves, plus pulse, respiration, and blood pressure tracked over time.

Head-to-toe physical exam

A thorough assessment of skin, ears, eyes, nose, throat, heart, abdomen, reflexes, and spine (including scoliosis screening for older children).

Developmental & behavioral milestones

Age-appropriate motor, speech, social, and cognitive milestones — with mental-health and behavioral screening for adolescents.

Immunizations & screenings

Recommended vaccines plus vision, hearing, and lab screenings (such as anemia or lead) when clinically appropriate.

Integrative lifestyle guidance

Time set aside for nutrition, sleep, activity, screen-time, home safety, and school support — tailored to your family.

A wellness plan you leave with

Clear, personalized next steps and priorities for the months ahead, plus direct access to ask follow-up questions anytime.

Newborns & infants (0–12 mo)

A first visit at 3–5 days, then checkups at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 months — milestone checks, vaccines, and early feeding and sleep guidance.

Toddlers & early childhood (1–4 yr)

Visits at 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then ages 3 and 4 — tracking speech, behavior, coordination, and routines.

FAQ

Well-child visit FAQs

How often does my child need a well-child visit?
Infants are seen frequently — a first visit at 3–5 days, then at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 months. Toddlers are seen at 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30 months and again at ages 3 and 4. From age 5 through 21, we recommend a wellness exam once a year, in line with AAP guidance.
What’s the difference between a well-child visit and a sick visit?
A well-child visit is preventive — it’s done when your child is healthy to track growth and development, give vaccines, and plan ahead. A sick visit addresses an active problem like a fever, rash, or infection. As a member, your child has access to both, including same-day sick visits.
How long is a well-child visit at Calabasas Pediatrics?
Because we cap our patient panel, our visits are unhurried — typically 30 to 60 minutes. There’s time to complete a thorough exam and to talk through nutrition, sleep, behavior, and any questions you have, without watching the clock.
Do you offer newborn well-visits at home?
Yes. To protect your newborn’s developing immune system and spare exhausted parents a trip to the office, we offer initial newborn visits in the comfort of your home.
Are vaccines given during well-child visits?
Yes — recommended immunizations are administered during well-child visits, always after we’ve reviewed each vaccine with you and answered your questions. You’re never rushed into a decision.
Do you take insurance for well-child visits?
Calabasas Pediatrics is a concierge, membership-based practice and is not contracted with insurance. Your membership covers unhurried visits and direct physician access; vaccines and send-out labs are often billable to your insurance, and our team can help you submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
